CS: 6.1 Role of water in showing acidic and alkaline properties
LS: 6.1.1 Define acid and alkali.
LO: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
Define acid and alkali based on the Arrhenius Theory by answering the quiz correctly.
Differentiate the properties between the acid and alkali by choosing the correct answer in the quiz.
The presence of water is required for the creation of hydrogen ions, and it is only the presence of these ions that produces acidity. An acid will not exhibit acidic qualities if it is not mixed with water. The same thing goes for the alkali. Alkali substances will not shows its alkaline properties if there is no water involved in the reaction.
When an acid is dissolved in water, it creates hydrogen ions, H+(aq). The lower the pH, the larger the concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution (Higher tier). When an alkali is dissolved in water, it forms hydroxide ions, OH-(aq).
